How to Bathe a Pet Rabbit

Pet rabbits clean themselves regularly but may need an occasional bath. It is not recommended on a regular basis because it stresses the animal and it can suffer from a chill. If you must bathe your pet rabbit, here are some tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bathroom or kitchen sink with about two inches of lukewarm water. Mix a capful of non-allergenic pet shampoo into the water. There are shampoos made specifically for rabbits at your local pet store. If you can't find one, you can use one that is made for cats.

    • 2

Place the rabbit into the sink, holding her gently but firmly. Quickly use your free hand to scrub the dirty areas, paying close attention to the feet and bottom.

    • 3

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Be sure to get all of the shampoo out of the bunny's fur. If some is left in, it could cause a skin irritation.

    • 4

Lift the rabbit out of the sink and wrap in a towel. Dry her thoroughly using a hair dryer set on WARM, not HOT.

    • 5

Put the rabbit in a warm place to dry for the next day. If the rabbit lives in a hutch outside, place her in a cage indoors until she is completely dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try spot cleaning the dirty area before resorting to a full bath.

  • If your rabbit is sick, do not give her a bath.

  • If your rabbit gets a chill and can't seem to get warm again, contact your veterinarian immediately.
