A battery kill or cut-off switch can be a cheap and effective theft deterrent. By installing a kill switch, you will effectively disable every electronic feature on the automobile. Nothing that requires electrical power will work. The only way to start the vehicle would be to know where the switch is located and physically make the switch close.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a mechanical switch rated for the power required by the automobile's battery and other systems. Placing a switch that is under-rated in the circuit will simply blow the switch when it is closed and the automobile is running. If the switch fails, either it will fail in the open position which would kill the power immediately, or it will fail in the closed position having no immediate symptoms but would allow the power to flow to all the systems all the time.

  2. Step 2

Locate the battery of the vehicle. Disconnect the positive and negative pole cables from the battery. This is a great time to make sure the poles are clean and fill the battery fluid level.

  3. Step 3

Remove the battery connector from the positive cable and insert your switch between the end of the cable and the battery terminal. Be sure to wire it so that the connection is made when the switch is in the on position and that the connection is broken when the switch is in the off position.

  4. Step 4

Mount the switch in a place where you can change its position from open to closed without anyone noticing you. It will not deter theft if the thief can watch you activate the switch.

  5. Step 5

Take care when working with electricity. Follow proper safety to avoid serious injury to both people and property.
