How to Look Busy While Using a Computer

It's so annoying when co-workers and supervisors interrupt when you're trying to keep up with your favorite blogs and forums. However, there are ways to get past these interceptions so that you can once again enjoy your computer time. One of the keys to avoiding interruptions is to look busy.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with body language. When you're interrupted at the computer, don't act guilty or minimize windows immediately. Barely glance up at your co-worker. Make sure your face looks like you're concentrating, and keep your posture in a "ready" position. Your body language should look as if you are in the middle of something important, and you don't want anyone to interrupt you.

    • 2

Make use of your pointing device. Pretend to open or close windows, or to make selections with your mouse. Use the track wheel to scroll through a pretend document.

    • 3

Type away. There's nothing like the sound of clicking keys to say "I'm busy!" Use the space bar to make it more realistic, or backspace a couple of times to make it look like you've made a mistake.

    • 4

Stop typing. People do a lot of reading on the computer nowadays, so stop and just read every so often. Really concentrate, and move your eyes as if you were reading.

    • 5

Add sound. Be sure to sigh, or to talk to your screen once in a while. In addition, you may be able to program your computer to make random sounds now and then, too.
