The Marine Corps requires that all Marines have a neat and clean uniform that meets certain standards set by the Marine Corps. Rank insignia must adorn and align to meet the high standards. Marines always wear the uniform with great pride.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iron
  • Marine Corps Uniform Regulations
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Safety pins
  • Sewing kit
  1. Step 1

Inspect your uniform and rank insignia prior to putting the rank insignia on it. Your uniform and rank insignia should be clean and free from any defects.

  2. Step 2

Iron your uniform. Wrinkles and unnecessary creases will change the measurements of the uniform and may cause the rank insignia to align incorrectly.

  3. Step 3

Read the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations to find the proper placement for your rank insignia. Proper placement for your rank insignia depends on your rank and uniform.

  4. Step 4

Use a ruler to measure the placement of your rank insignia. Tape measures are another option if a ruler isn't available.

  5. Step 5

Fasten the insignia to the uniform. If you are sewing on a fabric insignia, attach it temporarily using safety pins.

  6. Step 6

Check the alignment of the rank insignia by measuring it again. If you are dealing with a fabric insignia, sew it on once the alignment is correct. Remove the safety pins after sewing on the insignia.

  7. Step 7

Ask a comrade to inspect your insignia placement. This will help you avoid unnecessary correction by a superior officer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider buying new rank insignia if you have an inspection coming up. Your uniform should be perfect for a formal inspection.
  • Never wear a torn, dirty or wrinkled uniform.
