1
Ask yourself if you want to go to seminary. While this is not necessary to lead worship at all churches, some churches do have positions that are more pastoral in nature and might require a degree in Worship Arts or something similar. Seminary is a good choice if you are new to the faith and need to learn biblical truths before leading.

2
Pray and ask God if this is what He wants you to do, and not simply your own desire for yourself. Many talented musicians begin leading worship with the wrong motives. The right and only motive for becoming involved with the worship team is that you want to lead others closer to God. If this is not in your heart, wait until you can honestly say your motives are pure.

3
Become familiar with contemporary and traditional worship music and their styles. Check out the churches in your area to see what genres of music are played at each service. Make a list of the churches where you feel you could serve and where you would have something to offer the congregation.

4
Join a worship team to play your instrument or sing. Many congregations hire from within the people who are dedicated to their congregation and have proved so over time. Volunteer first and see what opportunities become available later. If nothing else, the experience is valuable and you can use it as a reference for when you do find that music leader position that's available.
