How to Act Around a New Friend

Making new friends can be nerve wracking. What to talk about or how to act is usually in the back of your mind. If you know what their interests are, you can more easily make conversation. Finding things you have in common can also ease conversations with new friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Engage in conversation with your new friend, or potential new friend. Introduce yourself, make small talk, ask what her interests are and tell her something about yourself.

    • 2

Remain positive as you talk to him. Most people like positive energy, where negativity turns people away--even if you intend it to be humorous.

    • 3

Think about what kind of friend you want for yourself and treat your new friend that way. Compassion towards others will help make and keep new friends, and is a good guideline to use when you're not sure how to act.

    • 4

Act outgoing even if you're shy. Smile at your new friend and ask open ended questions that can keep conversations going.

    • 5

Listen to your friend. When you ask a question, listen for her response. Use body language to let her know you are interested in what she has to say.

    • 6

Follow up with your new friend. Call or email him and return any phone calls or emails your new friend has made to you to keep the contact going.

    • 7

Invite your friend out. Go somewhere that's interesting to both you where you can enjoy yourselves and get to know one another better. Bring along other friends that have the same interests as you both.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have anything positive to say, don't say too much. Laugh at the negative happenings in your life instead of complaining with your new friend.

  • Taking the initiative to speak to others takes the pressure off them and possibly makes them feel more at ease.

  • If you relax and be yourself, you'll seem friendly to others.

  • Don't be a clinging friend, especially in the beginning of a new friendship. This might scare any potential new friends away.
