How to Act and Look Smart

Acting and looking smart if you're not is a game you can't play at for very long without being found out. In order to act and look smart, you must actually invest the time, energy and money into becoming smarter and having something important to say.

1. Educate yourself. Place an importance on gaining a desire to learn first, if you don't already have it. As you see the benefit of learning, you'll naturally crave more information and begin to challenge yourself. Acting and looking smarter becomes less of a challenge for you as you gain knowledge and skill in areas that interest you.

2. Dress and carry yourself with confidence and purpose. Smart people know that looking your best produces good work, and dressing poorly creates a slack mentality. There's no need to dress to impress. Just dress so that you put yourself in a mentality that's ready to work and achieve success. Sitting up straight and staying alert engages your person with the world around. You automatically learn more in a wakeful, alert state.

3. Choose your words wisely. Always having something to say usually makes you look like a know-it-all, not smart. Plan to not offer your advice, expertise or knowledge until someone asks you for your input. Smart people know they're smart and don't need the approval of others to know that their knowledge and abilities are valuable.

Tips & Warnings

• Leave the ideas of carrying books around with you, wearing geeky glasses or suspenders and being a loner out of your definition of being smart. Smart people come in all shapes and sizes, personalities and backgrounds. Be yourself while trying to act and look smart. You might just end up redefining what smart looks like.

• Avoid extremism. Many smart people forget to do the small things in life that bring joy or create wonder. Don't lose your sense of awe or forget you need to bathe regularly. Stay balanced. That's smart.
