How to Redeem Credit Card Rewards

Many credit card companies offer credit card rewards. To redeem these rewards you need to do certain things. Each company is different so you need to understand what you are getting when you sign up with a company. Some of the things you can get with your rewards are cash, merchandise, gift cards and entertainment tickets.

1. Earn points by using your credit card--when you reach the amount you need to redeem your rewards find out what you need to do to redeem them.

2. Redeem your points for cash, which is one of the options most companies offer. Earning the points differs which each credit card. You may earn extra points for every dollar you spend on gas, restaurants, hotels and auto rentals depending on the time of year--some programs are automatic others you have to enroll.

3. Check and see which gift cards your credit card offers. You may want to give a specific gift card to someone for their birthday or Christmas so you want to build your points on the card that allows you to redeem your points for the card that you want.

4. Apply for credit cards in the stores that you shop at often that offer you something for the money you are spending. For instance, Target gives you a 10 percent off day for every so much money you spend. They send this to you as soon as you qualify.

5. Use your rewards to pay down your bill. Some companies, such as Discover, allow you to use your cash back rewards to apply directly to your credit card balance. This is a definite help to reduce your debt. Alternatively, you can have your cash sent directly to your checking account or you can have the company send you a check.

Tips & Warnings

• You don't have to redeem all your points at the same time. As long as you keep your account current, you can redeem all or any part of the rewards.
