The quality of your credit will determine what options you have when applying for a loan, a job or even a checking account. You should check your credit every year to search for any annual errors that can be fixed. Experian is one of the three bureaus that report your credit score. It's important to educate yourself on how to contact Experian and dispute an error properly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Order a free annual credit report if you don't have one already. All three credit reports will be included from Annual Credit Report online. It will include the Experian, Trans Union and Equifax bureaus. You are also entitled to get a free report if you have been denied for a loan or employment.

  2. Step 2

Review the credit report for unfamiliar entries or mistakes. Read it through a few times to become familiar with the format. Especially look for correct address and name to prevent other people's credit mistakes from showing up on your report.

  3. Step 3

Write a letter and gather copies of documents that support your position. The letter should have your full name and address, a date, the item you're disputing and the reason why you disagree. Identify Experian in the letter. Include a copy of the credit report as well.

  4. Step 4

Make copies of what you are sending. Mail the letter and documents certified mail with return receipt requested to Experian: P.O. Box 2104 Allen, TX 75013. Their phone number is (888) 397-3742. If you don't receive a response within 30 days, you can seek litigation against them under The Fair Credit Reporting Act.
