How to Use Nouns as the Object of a Preposition

The combination of a preposition, modifiers and the object of the preposition is called a prepositional phrase and it can occur anywhere in a sentence. The preposition is used to show the relationship between other words in a sentence. It most commonly tells when or where its object, usually a noun, occurs. Follow these steps to correctly and effectively use a noun as the object of a preposition.

1. Choose a preposition. This is usually a short word that shows the connection between its object, in this case a noun, and some other word in a sentence. For instance, in the sentence "My tennis shoes are in my closet," the preposition "in" shows the connection between the "shoes" and the "closet." Some other examples of prepositions include under, over, around, with, to, from, by, on, at, of and through.

2. Select the noun you wish to use as the object of your preposition. A noun is any person, place, or thing.

3. Place the noun after the preposition. In some cases you may want to use some kind of modifier between the preposition and the noun. This can be a simple article like "a," "an" or "the," or an adjective used to describe the noun you're using as the object of the preposition. For instance, in the prepositional phrase "under the green table," "under" is the preposition, "table" is the noun that serves as the object of the preposition, "the" is the article and "green" is the adjective, both of which modify the noun "table."
