There is a rock concert-volume revolution going on in the music industry that is enabling indie musicians to self-publish their work. The Internet, inexpensive recording technology and a bit of bootstrapping make self-publishing the new way to go for indie music.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sort out all your rights issues including who in the band (including former members) gets what, and who is responsible for various portions of the cost. Also make sure that you've cleared any music you may have sampled before you inadvertently break copyright laws by self-publishing.

  2. Step 2

Record a few tracks using equipment as simple as your home computer, a decent microphone and a good recording software such as Magix music studio 10 deLuxe or Apple GarageBand 2. Edit the songs to the right length and sound and get them into different digital formats.

  3. Step 3

Create a page on MySpace that show you or your band and talks about your music. Upload your formatted tracks in order to publish them on your MySpace page.

  4. Step 4

Publish a few of your tracks on YouTube. If you have the resources to make a music video for one of your songs, do so, and then upload the video to YouTube and categorize it under a group that contains your other tracks.

  5. Step 5

Submit a sample of your music to indie music blogs such as the Indie Music Blog, Obscure Sound, HereYa and Sheppizle. Write a small article about you or your band and your musical inspiration so the blogger has plenty of content to publish about you if he decides to do so.
