Step 1
Wash your body first and exfoliate the dead skin cells. A good thorough scrub will remove the flaky skin for a more smooth and natural appearance of your tanning product.
-
Step 2
Pre-test the product. If you're going to sunbathe without sun there are still precautions you should take. Apply a tiny amount of the product of choice to a small area. If skin allergies or discoloration appear discontinue use and contact a physician.
-
Step 3
Apply lotion. Self-tanning is often achieved with body lotions and face creams. Be sure to follow directions to avoid blotching and streaking when applying. Allow product to dry completely before wearing clothing.
-
Step 4
Wipe on gels. Another formula to achieve a sunless tan is a gel product. Some people prefer the gel consistency over lotion. Mousse is also available as a self-tanner.
-
Step 5
Spray on a hot tan. Airbrush tanning has become popular with many sunless tanners. A huge benefit to this type of tan is it's even application with a spray gun. Eyes, mouth and nose are covered to prevent injury.
-
Step 6
Get a tan in a tanning bed. This method was once extremely popular but now competes heavily with other applications such as lotions and sprays. Eyewear needs to be worn at all times as well as sunscreen in a tanning bed.
-
Step 7
Stand up to get a deep dark tan. Tanning booths are similar to tanning beds except you stand up rather than lay down. Some folks feel it is more sanitary since your body doesn't touch the equipment. One advantage to a tanning booth is getting a perfectly even tan.
