How to Find a Linux Web Hosting Provider

Web hosting providers come in two basic flavors. There is Linux (a derivative of UNIX) and Windows (a Microsoft product). The market is flooded with web hosting providers, which may make it a bit tough for you to choose the right one for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Read the web host's advertisements. Generally web hosts will advertise whether they are using a Linux or Windows hosting platform. Many web hosts offer both platforms.
Step2
Look for CGI and Perl scripts. Linux web hosts provide an abundance of CGI and Perl scripts. CGI and Perl scripts allow your website to gather information from visitors and provide dynamic content.
Step3
Lurk around in forums. There are many "geek" type forums that discuss the intricacies of Linux vs. Windows web hosting. Read several of the posts. You will find recommendations from users about their experience with several Linux web hosting providers.
Step4
Compare prices. Linux web hosting is usually cheaper. Since Linux is a free open source software, the web hosting company's costs are lower. Windows hosting companies have to purchase the necessary licenses from Microsoft, which serves to increase their operating costs.
Step5
Peruse web hosting review sites. Sites like WebHostingReview.com and Cnet.com review the top 10 web hosts. You may or may not choose a Linux web hosting provider from their recommendations, but at least you have an idea as to what to look for when you are contemplating a particular web hosting company's services.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most web hosting companies offer either a 30- or 60-day trial period. If you are unfamiliar with Linux web hosting services, try one for 30 or 60 days to see if you like it.
