How to Explain Hockey to Kids

The game of hockey is fast-paced and exciting. It's a great experience to share with kids if you're an adult hockey fan . Because of its fast pace and many rules and penalties, hockey can be confusing to some kids at first. With a little explanation, however, hockey can be an enjoyable for family members of all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain the rules simply in language that's appropriate to the child's age. Words like "offsides" or "high-sticking" can be confusing to younger hockey fans that don't understand some of the game's complex rules yet. Once they understand how the game is played, you can use official terminology with them.

    • 2

Explain the basics of the game and let them decide for themselves what teams and players they like and dislike. As a seasoned hockey fan, you're entitled to think that a particular team is better than another or that one player takes cheap shots and plays dirty, but your kids deserve to form their own opinions. Differing opinions can only make the game more fun for both of you.

    • 3

Take your kids to a minor league or high school game to start and explain to them everything that's happening on the ice. Once they understand the basics at this level, they will be able to understand the more frenetic action of an NHL game.

    • 4

Let your kids ask lots of questions while you're explaining hockey to them so that they fully understand the game. This might mean explaining an icing penalty to them three or four times, but they'll eventually understand this penalty call and be able to anticipate it when it happens.

    • 5

Play one on one with your kids. Setting up a simple hockey game can help them understand where certain players are allowed to travel on the ice, the responsibilities of each player and how certain penalties are incurred. Just like with board games or strategy games, getting your kids involved in playing hockey helps them gain an overall understanding and appreciation for the sport.
