New Unionism is the modern reinterpretation of labor socialism in certain parts of the English speaking world. New Unionism's proponents try to find labor-minded solutions for the economic problems of today's corporate world. The relevance and historical depth of the movement make tracking and understanding the New Unionism of today interesting and richly informative.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Learn about the history of the term "New Unionism" by reading the political material of British New Unionists of the late 19th century such as Tom Mann and John Burns. Then update your understanding of the topic by reading Charles Heckscher's "The New Unionism: Employee Involvement in the Changing Corporation" in the Industrial and Labor Relations Review.
Step2
Check out the New Unionism network at NewUnionism.com to track the latest in the world of the New Unionists. Join and participate in the site's forums and ask plenty of questions so you can get a feel for what's going on in the world of contemporary unionists.
Step3
Follow and track the size, influence and activities of new unions, or unions that fit into the New Unionism paradigm, such as the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of North America and other international, large scale unions such as Britain's TUC and New Zealand's Public Services Association.
Step4
Keep track of the major academic journals that cover the topic of New Unionism such as Cornell University's Industrial Labor Relations Review, the Journal of Labor Research, the Labor Studies Journal and the Employee Relations Law Journal.

on 3/18/2008 Hi
My name is Peter Hall-Jones and I do Comms work with the New Unionism network. I wonder if I could ask you to make a small but important correction to the article above? The address you cite in Step Two is www.newunionism.com. This is not ours, and doesn't work. It should be changed to www.newunionism.net.

People who do not want to join the network (ie if they don't accept the principles we stand for) might like to know that there is an open New Unionism forum on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4252708210
