Step 1
Start with the basics. The first thing you'll need is to find your wings. The wing is the piece of apparatus that is also called the canopy.
-
Step 2
Learn the ropes. High-strength, light-weight fiber lines are attached to the canopy and then to the risers. This rope is extremely strong and each line will hold approximately 300 to 400 lbs.
-
Step 3
Rise to the occasion. Risers are a piece of equipment in paragliding that attach the lines to the harness. You must have one for each side of the canopy.
-
Step 4
Harness yourself in tight. The pilot will sit in the harness as he glides through the air. Each harness is designed with foam support and some have extra back and side support as well as a side compartment for storage.
-
Step 5
Select a reserve parachute to be installed within the harness for a more abrupt stop and secure landing.
-
Step 6
Wear the proper helmet. A helmet is a critical piece of equipment in paragliding. There are open face and full face types. Select the one best for you and your style of flying that won't effect your peripheral vision.
-
Step 7
Gear up for flying. Ankle boots, full framed eye wear, a two-way radio and a variometer to detect direction and speed are necessities for the paraglider. Keep additional emergency items inside harness storage compartment such as food, water and first aid.
