Spot a Bad Babysitter

Choosing a babysitter is one of the most anxiety-inducing tasks for new parents. It is heartbreaking to think that all babysitters will not be loving and attentive to your child, but bad babysitters do exist, and these tips can help you spot them before they have a negative impact on your child.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay attention to your child's reception of the sitter. If your child is never happy to see their babysitter, seems withdrawn or frightened, and cries when you try to leave, this is a sign that the babysitter is not a good one. Some children have typical separation anxiety, but anxiety that seems out of proportion or more intense than other situations warrants concern.

    • 2

Ask questions about their time together. If your sitter seems secretive or forgetful about their day, it could be a sign that they are not spending the time as you have requested. A good sitter should be eager and willing to share all of the fun and stimulating activities they have done during the day.

    • 3

Keep track of accidents. If your child seems to be getting more than the normal amount of bumps and bruises, your babysitter might not be providing adequate supervision. Children will always have accidents as they learn to cruise, crawl and toddle, but your babysitter should be able to explain just how your child got each bump and bruise if they are observing your child carefully.

    • 4

Determine if the babysitter follows your requests. A babysitter is an employee and should take your directions seriously. If your sitter has the attitude that her approach is better than yours, it is time to find another babysitter. A good sitter should respect your role as the child's parent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trust your instincts. If you feel that a babysitter is not right for your family, be honest with her and search for a better fit.
