How to Trace a Person's DNA Ancestry
There is a new tool for genealogy buffs. With the help of modern technology, you can learn about the migration patterns of your ancestors. This process involves simple DNA testing, which when analyzed and compared with other DNA samples, provides you with a genetic history. Begin your journey by following these steps.

Select a company to help you trace your DNA history. The National Geographic Genomic Project and Genetic Genealogy both offer this service for a fee (see Resources below).

Order the buccal swab kit from the company. Your kit includes a swab for your cheek and a self-addressed envelope to return your sample. There may also be a DVD and map of world human migration.

Wait for the kit to arrive. Once you receive the kit, follow the directions for DNA testing. You'll use a cotton swab to collect a DNA sample from the inside of your cheek.

Place the cotton swab in the tube or container provided for safe transportation. Return it to the testing company in the self-addressed envelope.

Wait for approximately 2 to 6 weeks. During this time the company will analyze your sample. They may request additional information if results are not conclusive.

Receive your genetic profile, detailing your genetic ancestry.

Check back with the company frequently to obtain updates. As more people submit samples for DNA testing, information may become more accurate.
