The first step in knitting gloves is to decide on the desired style. This is for fingerless men's gloves. Materials needed are no more than 200 yards of sport weight yarn, size 3 needles, a set of 5 double pointed needles, yarn to use as stitch holders, blunt needle and stitch markers. This pattern will make size medium to large gloves for a man.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Right Glove Cuff

  1. Step 1

Start with the cuff of the right glove by casting for 52 stitches on 4 double-pointed needles.

  2. Step 2

Add in ribbing by knitting 2 and purling 2 to create a 3-inch or longer cuff. In the last round of ribbing, increase by 4 stitches evenly for a total of 56 stitches.

  3. Step 3

Switch to a stocking stitch and work for 3 more rounds.

  4. Right Thumb Gusset

  5. Step 1

Begin the thumb gusset on the beginning of the next round. Purl 1, then increase in the next stitch, knit 2, increase in next stitch and purl 1. Knit two even rounds and make sure the purl one sets in uniformly.

  6. Step 2

Start the next round with a purl 1, increasing by one stitch. Knit 4, increase in the next stitch, purl 1 and then knit until the end of the next round. Knit 2 even rounds and keep the purl 2 stitches uniform. Continue to increase in every third round with stitches until 18 stitches are completed between the 2 purl stitches.

  7. Step 3

Knit 1 and then slip the next 18 stitches onto a holder and then cast on for 4 stitches, followed by knitting around. Knit evenly for about 1/2 inch to the beginning of the fingers.

  8. Step 4

Allign the needle with the thumb and leave the first 8 stitches on while slipping 40 stitches onto the holder. Remember to leave 8 on the needle.

  9. First Finger

  10. Step 1

Knit 8 stitches and then cast on 3 stitches to make a gusset. Knit the remaining 8 stitches for the finger.

  11. Step 2

Keep on doing this for approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches, changing at that point to a knit 1, purl 1 pattern. Continue with the knit 1, purl 1 pattern for approximately 4 rounds.

  12. Step 3

After completing 4 rounds, bind off in a rib.

  13. Second Finger

  14. Step 1

Pick up 7 stitches from the back of the hand, 3 stitches from the first finger gusset, as well as 8 stitches from the palm.

  15. Step 2

Cast on for 3 to create the gusset for the second finger.

  16. Step 3

Join this into the round the same way the first finger was done. After this is completed, bind off.

  17. Third Finger

  18. Step 1

Pick up 6 stitches from the back of the hand, bring 3 stitches from the second finger as well as 7 stitches from the palm.

  19. Step 2

Cast on for 3 to create the gusset.

  20. Step 3

Complete as indicated for the second finger.

  21. Fourth

  22. Step 1

Utilize the remaining 12 stitches to begin the fourth finger.

  23. Step 2

Pick up 2 stitches from the third finger gusset.

  24. Step 3

Bind off after the desired length is created.

  25. Right Thumb

  26. Step 1

Pick up 18 stitches on string and stitch for 4 where they were casted on. In a stocking stitch, knit for several rounds to create the length of choice.

  27. Step 2

Finish by knit 1, purl 1 ribbing pattern as done for the fingers.

  28. Step 3

    Bind off when complete.

  29. Left Glove

  30. Step 1

Begin at the thumb gusset to start the left glove.

  31. Step 2

Knit for 6 stitches of the round, purl 1 and increase in next stitch. Knit 2, increase in next stitch and purl 1.

  32. Step 3

Continue fingers as done in right glove.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pick up stitches for the left glove in reverse to the right glove by picking up from the back instead of palm and vice versa.
