How to Pick a Hamster Wheel

Hamster wheels are a great source of exercise for small rodents such as hamsters, gerbils or mice. Most hamster wheels are sturdy plastic and have at least two entry holes. Hamster wheels can be free standing or attach to the side of your pet's cage.

Instructions

1. Decide how you want to use your hamster wheel. Hamsters need regular exercise, but they can be noisy at night. If you sleep in the same room with your hamster cage, you might consider a wheel kept apart from the cage just for exercise time during the day.

2. Choose a wheel made of sturdy plastic. Old fashioned hamster wheels of metal with rungs aren't safe and can cause injury. Appropriate hamster wheels have a solid running surface.

3. Pick a hamster wheel that has some ventilation. Many plastic hamster wheels are quiet and have a good surface, but are lacking in ventilation. If your hamster cage is in the sun or in a warmer climate, this is dangerous.

4. Consider a run about ball for quieter exercise. Use balls outside the cage, but be sure and provide a wheel in the cage for adequate exercise as well.

5. Look for hamster wheels with easy access. The best choice is a wheel that is completely open on one side and clips onto the side of the cage or is freestanding.

6. Expand your hamster's play area by purchasing a wheel that expands the side of the cage. Many hamster wheels clip easily to the outside of the cage. This provides an exercise wheel without taking up space inside the cage.
