Emergencies can happen at any time with a horse. The best way to handle emergencies is to not get caught off guard and to be prepared. Veterinarians are not always available immediately. By supplying yourself with essential materials, you save your vet's time and your own money, and the horse can be spared some pain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Purchase a small tool box that is light enough to carry around and able to be securely locked.
Step2
Start collecting the material for the kit by selecting bandaging material you like using. Generally large gauze pads, rolled cotton, gauze wrap and vet wrap work well together.
Step3
Buy cheap rubbing alcohol.
Step4
Acquire ointments and sprays that can be applied to open wounds under the wrapping.
Step5
Collaborate with your veterinarian to purchase medications that you are comfortable administering. You want a painkiller, sedative and an anti-inflammatory with cortisone steroid in it for allergic reactions. If needles and syringes are needed to give the medications have them for your first aid kit as well.
Step6
Organize all of these materials into your tool box. Keep the tool box locked and in a secure area.
Step7
Have your veterinarian’s contact information available at all times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your first aid kit locked up in a safe place.
