Learning to type like a professional requires lots of practice!
Learning to type like a professional requires lots of practice!

There are many jobs that may require you to type, such as secretarial or medical transcribing positions. Many people think that learning to type is difficult. In reality, it is something that just about anyone can master if they try. If you follow these simple steps, you will eventually learn to type like a professional.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time to practice
  • A typing class or computer program
  1. Step 1

Become familiar with where the keys are placed on the keyboard. Until you have a good understanding of where they are, you will not be able to learn to type like a professional. Before you can really begin to learn how to type well, it is important for you to know where exactly the keys on the keyboard are like the back of your hand. Gradually learning where certain keys are may help you eventually learn where they all are. You should eventually be able to find them with your eyes shut!

  2. Step 2

Practice typing frequently and on a regular basis. Remember that practice makes perfect. Until you begin typing on a regular basis, it is unlikely that you will be able to become perfect at it. The best thing that you can do is set aside a certain amount of time each day that you will be able to type during. This will help get you into the habit of typing on a regular basis.

  3. Step 3

Turn on a song with lyrics that you are not familiar with. Try to type the lyrics to the song as quickly as you listen to it, without any misspellings. When you are finished, replay the song to check for accuracy. You can do this with movies, television shows or even by listening to a friend or family member speak, as long as you do not ask them to continuously repeat themselves. The main key is to see how accurate you can be by listening to something in a fairly quick amount of time.

  4. Step 4

Take a typing class. Most community colleges and universities offer typing classes for a fairly low cost. If you are unable to fit a typing class into your hectic schedule, then you may want to consider investing in a computer program that will teach you how to type, such as Mavis Beacon. Some people may be better off with a computer program, as it allows you the chance to type on your own whenever possible. If you really want to learn how to type to your full potential, then you may want to think about taking a typing class and using a computer program.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that it will take time to learn to type like a professional.
  • Remember that quality is more important than quantity.
  • Set realistic goals. Don’t try to learn everything all at once.
  • Have patience with yourself. Everyone makes mistakes at first.
  • Don't focus too hard on typing good. You may make more mistakes this way.
