Whether you are in high school, middle school or college, the idea of taking a creating writing course may sound a bit frightening to you. Students at any age tend to make creative writing more difficult than it needs to be, however. Although the idea of taking this type of class may seem like a challenge, this does not mean that you will be unable to succeed. Here are some things to consider if you want to know how to succeed in a creative writing course.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Creativity
  • Self discipline

Step1
Be sure to complete all assignments on time. This is one of the most important things that you will need to do if you wish to succeed in a creative writing course. You cannot expect to receive a good grade in a creative writing class if you hand assignments in long after they are due, or not at all. If you have a problem that may prevent you from handing an assignment in on time, it is a good idea to discuss it with the teacher or professor in advance.
Step2
Put your creative imagination to use. After all, it is a creative writing course. It is likely that you may end up revising the work that you do in a creative writing class and send it somewhere to be published in the future. By not using your creative imagination in your creative writing class, it is likely that you will only be hurting yourself in the long run. Besides, most of our best ideas come to us when we are trying to be creative.
Step3
Always be sure to try your hardest to exceed expectations. If you have a story to write for your creative writing course that needs to be somewhere between 15 and 25 pages, you should always try to reach 25. If you have to write somewhere between 20 and 30 poems, aim to write 30. Even if you are unable to meet your goals, it is a good thing to raise the bar high for yourself.
Step4
Be sure to double-check grammar before handing in any assignment. If you are taking a creative writing class, it is likely that you already have a good grasp on grammar. Since almost all teachers or professors will take grammar into consideration when grading your work, it is important to always double-check what you have written. Careless mistakes may cost you a good grade. If you need help with grammar, consider visiting a tutor or a grammar workshop, which are often provided at colleges or libraries for free.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to avoid using inappropriate language in a creative writing class.
  • It’s always best to avoid using common or cliché ideas in your works. Originality goes a long way.
  • Make it a goal for your writing to progress throughout the semester.
  • Keep in mind that you will probably get a lot of criticism, from both your teacher and other students in the class.
  • Avoid taking online creative writing classes whenever possible, as face-to-face peer workshops tend to be very useful.
  • Don't write about personal experiences unless you want them to be read.
  • Remember that high school teachers will be required to report true stories about rape or abuse.
