See Ghosts at Greyfriar's Kirk Cemetery and Covenanters' Prison in Edinburgh, Scotland

In 1600, the Covenanters were a political force in Scotland whose main purpose was to keep Scotland a Presbyterian nation. With the arrival of King Charles II, the Covenanter movement was defeated and hundreds of Covenanters were imprisoned. The Covenanters' Prison and Greyfriar's Kirk Cemetery are now home to the restless and wronged spirits of beheaded and tortured Scotsmen. If you are brave enough, you can meet them! Here's how.

First, you must find a tour company to take you on a night tour of the location. Once you arrive in Edinburgh, ask at your hotel for information on a tour of The City of the Dead, or a nighttime tour of the Covenanters' Prison and Cemetery along. Book your tour.

      The City of the Dead

Be prepared for an attack. Many visitors to this location, and one particular mausoleum, report bruises and cuts on their body well after their tour has ended. Mind you, this is one of the most haunted locations in Scotland, and the grounds are kept under lock and key to protect its citizens.

      The Black Tomb

Spend plenty of time at the Black Tomb or the MacKenzie Mausoleum. This is where most of the physical attacks take place. MacKenzie was the Covenanters' prison judge and sentenced many souls to terrible deaths. Activity began here after a homeless man broke into the mausoleum searching for shelter. After disturbing the residents of the tomb, the paranormal activity started and has come to be very reliable. Do some EVP work here.

      Greyfriar's cemetery

Walk among the over 400 headstones in Greyfriar's cemetery. Be careful where you step though, as heavy rains often unearth some human bones! This was the only cemetery in the area for years and years, and bodies have been buried on top of each other for decades. The rough treatment and disrespect for the graves and markers has led to many paranormal events. You'll notice cold spots and, again, physical attacks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring plenty of film or memory sticks for your camera.

  • Be prepared to find physical marks after visiting the Black Tomb.

  • Only access the area with a tourguide. The grounds are otherwise locked and you should not trespass.

I will attest to the validity of some of these statements. On a tour in Jan 07, after entering the Covenanter's Prison, standing under the tree to the right just past the gate, I felt a cold blast up the back side of by coat and ill with nausea and a tight feeling in my chest slightly constricting my breathing. Upon approaching one of the masoleums, every red flag in my being warned me to not enter. I could not physically go inside without feeling the most despair and darkest feeling I have ever had, and I waited outside. I then experienced that same cold blast and nausea and shortness of breath on the way out passing under the same tree. This is no game nor hokus pokus hoax by any means. It is truly the scariest place I have ever encountered.
