These days it seems like everyone is concerned about their weight. We all want to eat healthy, lose weight, get in shape, and feel better and happier with ourselves. But sometimes it's hard to stick to your weight loss plans. The following steps should help you keep on track.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pen and paper
  • A diet buddy
  • A journal or online tracking device

Step1
Understanding your goal clearly keeps you working toward it. Write out your five most important reason for wanting to lose weight and be healthy. Your reasons can be anything from wanting to look sexy in that little black dress, to needing to lose weight because of doctor's orders. The reasons themselves aren't the focus. It's their importance to you that will keep you motivated. Hang this list on your fridge and read it every morning.
Step2
Diet buddies help keep you on track. Get a diet buddy. Having someone interested in your progress spurs you to succeed. Having a shoulder to cry on when you get off track helps too. Your diet buddy should have a positive, supportive attitude toward your weight loss goals, and be ready to help get you back on track if you need her to. This works best when you both are working toward weight loss and healthy living so that you can both support one another, but anyone with the right attitude will work.
Step3
In your journal, track what you eat each day. Write down how you feel mentally and emotionally as well as physically. Celebrate your successes (Wow, I actually ate a side of steamed vegetables with dinner. Yay, me!) and plan to improve on the setbacks. (Ugh, I couldn't eat just one so I had the whole bag!) Having this record will force you to be honest with yourself, and will help you realize what a change over time your new healthy food choices are making for you. Once you start feeling better physically, your mental/emotional well being will follow and before you know it you'll be a brand new healthy you!

Tips & Warnings

  • MyPyramid.gov has excellent information and resources, including an online food tracker to help you on your way.
  • Remember to celebrate success.
  • Don't let slip-ups get you down. Just focus on improving.

on 3/16/2008 Thank you for the comments. I do indeed have personal experience :) After I had my son I wanted to get back in shape. My husband was also overweight to the point where I was concerned with his health. We went on a campaign to start eating healthy and exercises no matter what. It was hard not to make excuses at first, but focusing on our goals and how much we wanted to be healthy and active parents and good role models for our son helped us through it all.
