Create a system restore point. To do this, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and select "Create Restore Point" Name restore point "Before cleaning up Start up items".
* Now that you have created a restore point, if anything goes wrong at any time, you can easily restore your computer back to the same spot, as if no changes were ever made. To do this, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and select "Restore my computer to an earlier time". We are going to be using restore points often in this article. Its the only truly safe way to make performance changes on your computer.

System Configuration Utility
Now we will clean your startup list
To do this, we will open up a Microsoft tool called System Configuration Utility.

Opening MSConfig, the System Configuration Utility
Click the START button on the lower left hand corner of your taskbar, the Click "Run", type 'msconfig' and press Enter.

3. You will see 7 Tabs. Go to the 6th tab titled "Startup".

4. You will now see a list with checkboxes. Above the Items will be 3 columns. The 1st one is "Startup Item". The 2nd one is "Command". The 3rd one is "Location".
* The 2nd column "Command" is going to be the column we will most focus on. We will focus very little on the 1st column "Startup Item" and we will not focus at all on the 3rd "Location" column .

5. Expand the right border of the "Command column so that you can see all the paths underneath it. Look at what they are, you will see any programs that open when your computer starts up. If you can open these programs by yourself after you computer starts up, you should disable them. To do this, uncheck the box next to the startup item. If you don't know what something is, DO NOT disable it (uncheck it). Just follow that rule and you won't have any problems.

6. Click "Apply", and then "OK" and you will notice a significant difference in your computer speed.
IT WILL BE FASTER IMMEDIATELY! But that's just the beginning...

Restart your computer. After you restart your computer, MSConfig will have a pop up on your screen. Check the box and click OK.
