How to Begin a Freeform Crochet Piece
Freeform crochet is a creative type of crochet. Rather than following a pattern to achieve a particular outcome, freeform crochet can come out any way you want it to. Size, shape, color and texture are all up to the individual crocheter. Your project may become a useful item or something to be admired as a colorful piece of art.

1
Start with a chain. Make a slipknot and hold the knot between your thumb and forefinger. Insert your hook through the loop, grab your yarn and pull a loop through. Grab the yarn again and pull the yarn through, making another loop. Continue until the chain is as long as you like. Because this is freeform crochet, there is no correct number of stitches for your chain.

Determine what shape you want the first portion of your freeform crochet to take. You might choose a circle or a rectangle. For a circle, hook together the first and last stitches of your starting chain and make several double crochets into the center of the circle. Join the circle with a slip stitch. Then stitch around the circle. For a rectangle, chain one more stitch at the end of your chain (or two stitches for double crochet, three for triple, and so on), then start making crochets back along your row of chain stitches. Continue back and forth to add rows, chaining the appropriate number at the start of each row.

Finish off your starting portion when you have a shape you like. Simply cut your yarn and pull the tail through your last stitch to finish it off. Take a new yarn and insert it into your starting piece anywhere you like. Start stitching in whatever direction and shape you want. Continue adding new yarns in different places to grow your freeform crochet.
