Kids love to play at sword fighting. Here is a way to let them fight to their hearts’ content without getting hurt or damaging the furniture. Those foam “noodles” you use in the swimming pool can be made into fun and safe play swords.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Foam swimming noodle, 6-feet long
  • Scissors or bread knife
  • Drill with 7/8-inch bit
  • Two 15-inch pieces of 1-inch PVC pipe
  • Craft glue made for foam
  1. Step 1

Cut the foam noodle in half.

  2. Step 2

Some noodles come with holes in the center and some do not. If your noodle does not already have a hole in the center, use a 7/8-inch bit to drill a hole as deep as possible into the center of the noodle. Do this on the end of each half-noodle.

  3. Step 3

Push a 15-inch piece of PVC pipe into the ends of the noodles. Slide the pipes in until less than 6 inches is left sticking out. (The PVC left sticking out will be the handle.)

  4. Step 4

Make sure the PVC pipe sticks in very tightly. If the PVC slides in and out too easily, the noodle will work its way off the handle when the swords are used. You may want to use a little foam craft glue to make the PVC stick inside the noodle.

  5. Step 5

Have fun swashbuckling with your swords. Remember, even though they are made of foam, you should still avoid aiming for your opponent’s face.
