Real estate laws and requirements are constantly changing. It is important to check for updated information before you follow the steps to become a real estate agent in your state. Here's how to get a California real estate license.

  1. Step 1

    You must be at least 18 years old and a legal resident of the U.S. Residency in California is not required, but California does not have reciprocity with any other state.

  2. Step 2

    To qualify for the broker license you need a minimum of 2 years of full-time experience during the last 5 years as a real estate salesperson.

  3. Step 3

    Eight approved college-level courses are required for those applying for a California broker license. They must be completed before taking the exam and cannot be continuing education courses.

  4. Step 4

    The examination fee for a broker's license is $50 and the license fee is $165.

  • If you hold a California broker license you must maintain a California business address if you are engaging in business in California.
