Viewed within the context of art history, a portrait reveals the aesthetic of a period. And, whereas some portraits are idealizations, others emphasize minor flaws to reveal the sujects' essence with greater impact.

  1. Step 1

    Look at the colors, design and texture of the portrait for quality of composition.

  2. Step 2

    Consider whether the portrait successfully conveys some essential quality of the subject or illuminates the subject's character in some way.

  3. Step 3

    Look at the facial expression and gestures for psychological insight into the subject.

  4. Step 4

    Look at the style of clothing and surroundings to determine the origin and era of the painting.

  5. Step 5

    Evaluate the overall effect of the portrait.
