Essentially an air-blown synthesizer, the harmonium is a famous instrument created in Paris in the 19th century, where it achieved great popularity throughout Europe and India. It's a fun and flexible instrument that can be a joy to play.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the instrument and its particular history. Learn about the brass reeds that compose a harmonium, as well as the pumping apparatus that provides the air flow to sound the notes. Also, harmoniums have different numbers of organ stops which greatly affect play.

  2. Step 2

Listen to harmonium music. Indian music in particular uses the harmonium to both support vocals and as a solo instrument. It is also used in Qawwali music of Pakistan, amongst such luminaries as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

  3. Step 3

Find a harmonium to play. This is the best way to determine your commitment and natural affinity with the instrument. Many specialty and online music stores carry the instrument. Renting a harmonium may also be a cheaper alternative to buying one outright.

  4. Step 4

Find a teacher. While there are many basic primers on the instrument available for purchase, an experienced teacher is the only way to learn how to truly play the instrument correctly. Ask at music shops, or attend cultural events featuring harmonium players to locate a teacher in your area.
