How to Make Traditional Dutch Pancakes

Drie-in-de-pan, or "Three in a Pan," is a traditional Dutch pancake that is made by frying 3 round pancakes in a pan. Eaten for breakfast, dessert or a snack this is comfort food at its very finest. Try you drei-in-de-pan the traditional way with raisins, currants and apples or make them with your choice of fruits and nuts. This is a quick and easy way to "Go Dutch"--and you don't even have to foot the bill.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 package ready-made yeast
  • 1 /4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup currants (optional)
  • Lemon rind
  • 1 small apple (optional)
  • margarine, butter or oil
  1. Step 1

    Prepare the yeast per the instructions on the package and set aside. Heat milk in the microwave until it is just lukewarm.

  2. Step 2

    Sift the flour and salt into a medium sized mixing bowl.

  3. Step 3

    Add the prepared yeast to the flour and salt mixture and gradually mix in the lukewarm milk until the batter is smooth. Add raisins, currants and apples. This is optional according to your tastes.

  4. Step 4

    Cover the bowl with a damp towel and place in a warm area, either in a a pan of warm water or near a heater. Let the dough rise for about one hour until it is twice its original size.

  5. Step 5

    Once the batter has been sitting for about an hour, it is ready for cooking. Heat a frying pan under very low heat and add a small amount of butter, margarine or oil.

  6. Step 6

    With a large spoon, put three small heaps of batter in the pan. Cook the pancakes until the top has dried and then flip it over to cook the other side.

  7. Step 7

    Serve with syrup, sugar, fruit or any other toppings that you like.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the pancakes warm while you cook the rest of the batter by keeping them in a warm oven or boil a pot of water and place the cakes on a plate over the pot.
  • Be careful that the heat isn't too high. You want to cook the pancakes slowly.
