Butterflies fluttering around your garden are beautiful to watch. But they don’t even compare with butterfly crafts made by your children. Waxed paper butterflies that look like stained glass are beautiful and fun to make. They also make wonderful gifts for friends and grandparents!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place a piece of waxed paper on the table. Using a knife, carefully shave the old crayons into small piles on the waxed paper. Be sure to keep the colors separate.

  2. Step 2

Fold a piece of waxed paper in two. Using a pencil, draw half of a butterfly on the paper. Be careful not to poke a hole in the paper with the pencil. Flip the waxed paper over and, using the first side as a template, draw the other half of the butterfly. They can be any size or shape; use your imagination.

  3. Step 3

Open the waxed paper and lay it flat on a heat resistant surface. Put the crayon shavings inside the butterfly in different patterns. Try not to mix up the different color of shavings.

  4. Step 4

Cover the waxed paper and crayon shavings with another piece of waxed paper. Place a piece of paper toweling over the waxed paper.

  5. Step 5

Turn the iron on to low heat. Carefully iron the papers, until the crayons melt between both pieces of waxed paper. As the melted crayons cool, it will join both pieces of waxed paper.

  6. Step 6

Cut out the butterfly. Punch a hole near the top. Put some string through the hole to hang in a window.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make several waxed paper butterflies and hang from a clothes hanger to create a butterfly mobile.
  • Supervise children when making this craft.
