Learn a few basic phrases in Czech before you visit the Czech Republic. Unlike many countries in Western Europe, English is not widely spoken in this part of the world, and by taking the time to learn a few useful words, you may win the respect of the locals. If you do need to converse with someone in English, you may have better luck with the younger people in town.

Be prepared to drink plenty of beer if you want to behave like a Czech. Lager beer was invented in Czech Republic, and having a glass or two in a local restaurant is the best way to make a few Czech friends in a hurry. Beer is so common in the Czech Republic that it's actually less expensive to buy than water.

Avoid smiling excessively or laughing for no reason when you are among the Czech people. While Czechs certainly have healthy senses of humor, they think it is silly to smile or laugh for no reason, and they may grow suspicious if you behave in this manner. It's considered appropriate to smile when you're introduced to someone, but not when you're merely sitting by yourself, watching your surroundings.

Double-check any charges for inaccuracies, such as restaurant bills, cab fares and even bus and train tickets. As an outsider, you may be treated like a fool if you are not hip and suspicious to the Czech ways. One of the best ways to behave like a Czech is to question every charge, every bill and every fee.

Keep your personal belongings in a safe and secure place, and be wary of your surroundings while you are in the Czech Republic. Pickpockets are rather common throughout the country, and if you behave like a tourist (speaking loudly, counting your money in public, wearing expensive watches or jewelry), you will be quickly targeted by seasoned criminals.

On Easter, it is a tradition for boys to spank girls with sticks until they receive colored Easter eggs. Since tourists are not exempt from this practice, it may be wise to prepare for this custom and not be offended when it happens.
