Moxibustion is an excellent remedy for pain of all kinds. It can treat joint pain, muscular pain, the pain of injuries, menstrual pain and even generalized pain. Some people who use it to treat pain swear it works better than the pain medicine that is available on the market today. Part of the reason moxibustion works so well for pain is that it increases blood flow to the painful area, which acts as an analgesic and promotes prompt healing. Back pain is often very difficult to treat, but you can use moxibustion to do it successfully.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Moxa stick
  1. Step 1

Peel the wrapping from a stick of moxa, exposing about half of the herb underneath. Light the exposed end of the stick and extinguish the flame. The moxa should remain hot and smoking.

  2. Step 2

Treat lower back pain by lying on your stomach and pulling up your shirt. Hand the moxa stick to a partner and have the partner wave the moxa stick over your lower back, holding the stick so that the burning end is pointing toward your back and the stick is about 1/2 inch above your skin.

  3. Step 3

Have your partner continue to wave the stick, concentrating on the area of your back that is parallel with your pubic bone. The waving should be slow and continue for 15 minutes before you extinguish the stick.

  4. Step 4

Treat upper back pain by waving the moxa stick over your right arm and along the right side of your face. These areas of your body contain the energy meridian for the small intestine, which needs to be stimulated to relieve upper back pain.

  5. Step 5

Extinguish the stick by tapping off excess ash and rubbing the end on a hard, flat, inflammable surface. Save the remainder of the stick, as it can be used again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Continue to use the moxibustion on your back every day until you no longer have any pain. You may feel some results right away and may even notice all the pain going away the first time. However, it may take several sessions to bring about a full healing that would keep the pain away on a permanent basis. Be patient and keep working at it for as many sessions as it takes.
  • After a moxibustion session, lie down for a while under several blankets to keep your back warm for as long as possible. This will enhance the effectiveness of the procedure and speed up the healing.
