In Reiki, a wide variety of practitioners exists due to the relative newness of the field. Sometimes selecting a Reiki practitioner can seem like a gamble, especially given the multiple ways one can learn to be a Reiki practitioner. Do some research to determine which Reiki practitioner is best.

From Quick Guide: Reiki Healing and Therapy
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discover who taught the Reiki practitioner. Ideally, the practitioner should be able to give the name of his teacher and of the teacher's teacher. One of the keys of selecting a good Reiki practitioner is choosing someone who can trace their Reiki lineage back to the founder of Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui.

  2. Step 2

Ask how long the Reiki practitioner has been giving Reiki treatments. This is simply a matter of experience, as a Reiki practitioner with years of experience will be a better selection than a Reiki practitioner who is just beginning. However, if a Reiki Master wishes to let a student give the Reiki treatment, let her do so in order to honor the Reiki Master's judgment and the new practitioner's commitment.

  3. Step 3

Select a Reiki practitioner who is associated with any of the Reiki organizations, such as the Reiki Alliance or the Association of Reiki Professionals (see Resources below). These organizations will give more credibility to a Reiki practitioner, and thus make him a better selection than a Reiki practitioner operating independently.

  4. Step 4

Find out the Reiki practitioner's stage of development. Try to select a Reiki Master, instead of a Reiki practitioner who is only at stage 1 or stage 2 of his development. This not only translates into better experience, but also into the Reiki practitioner's depth of commitment.

  5. Step 5

Aks whether the Reiki practitioner has insurance. This is simply due to the fact that Reiki is medicinal, and mistakes have been known happen. If you experience any unpleasant or persisting after-effects, then the Reiki practitioner should have some good insurance in order to ensure you receive fair compensation and the Reiki practitioner is not ruined.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the Reiki practitioner has good communications skills. A good Reiki practitioner will make her clients feel at ease just by talking to them. Since part of a Reiki treatment involves talking to clients and inducing a feeling of tranquility in them, select the Reiki practitioner who makes you feel the most tranquil and at ease.

  7. Step 7

Check out the state of the Reiki treatment room. It should be a clean, well-lit area that aids in giving the Reiki client a feeling of peace and tranquility. Some Reiki practitioners may also combine their Reiki treatments with some aromatherapy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit the International Association of Reiki Professionals (IARP) website to search for a practitioner by zip code (see Resources below).
  • Avoid selecting professional Reiki practitioners who have received their attunements through a distance learning or correspondence course. The best Reiki practitioners have received personal instruction at the hands of a Reiki Master.
