Things You'll Need:
- Directory of certified acupressure providers
-
Step 1
Discuss your desire to use acupressure as a treatment for pain or other health issues with your primary care physician. Not only should your doctor be aware of the treatments you will be undergoing, but he may also be able to help you select an acupressure professional.
-
Step 2
Choose an acupressure provider who specializes in the area for which you will be treated. To use acupressure to stop smoking, pick a professional who knows the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) method of auricular (ear) acupressure. Acufinder.com is an online locater service that lets you choose an area of expertise as you search for a provider (see Resources below).
-
Step 3
Confirm that the acupressure practitioner you have in mind is certified to practice in your state. The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) has a certification registry on their website (see Resources below). Users can find providers who have one of several different credentials in TCM.
-
Step 4
Make appointments for consultations with more than 1 acupressure practitioner in your area. At each appointment, discuss your reasons for pursuing acupressure as a treatment options and assess how each provider responds. You will want the practitioner to listen fully to what you have to say and ask you questions about your condition before she comes up with a treatment plan.
-
Step 5
Use word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and acquaintances if you are having trouble choosing an acupressure specialist. While this is not the main way to select a health care professional, it may be helpful if you are trying to decide between 2 equally qualified people.
