Coining, or cao gio, has been used for centuries in many Southeast Asian countries to treat minor ailments such as a cold or the flu. The treatment involves creating skin abrasions using a coin so that excess wind can escape the body. The belief is that the ailments are a symptom of a build-up of excess wind, or "wind illness." The coining procedure itself can be painful or uncomfortable to endure, but recovery is rather easy. Many of the things you do to recover from a coining treatment are the same things you would do to recover from a common cold or the flu.
