How to Install a Folding Sunroof
Just about everyone dreams of driving down scenic roads with the wind in their hair as they cruise along in their convertibles. Of course, this dream isn't always attainable or very practical, but there's always the option to install a folding sunroof for the next best thing to a true convertible. The best thing about a folding sunroof is that it's far easier to install than a convertible top and it can even be installed on the four-door family car if you're so inclined. If you're committed to the idea and can follow the instructions very carefully, you'll find yourself living out your dreams with your new folding sunroof, even if you're driving a sedan with two car seats in the back.

Instructions

1
Measure the roof of your car to find the exact size folding sunroof you will need. With a folding sunroof you can install a sunroof with only a 2-inch clearance on either side.
-
2
Purchase a quality folding sunroof. Just as with a convertible top, a folding sunroof is made of a durable fabric, but will also have to stand up to weather and sun, so be sure to find a retailer that will stand behind their product.
-
-
3
Check your installation kit to make sure all of the parts are there. There should be an exhaustive parts list with the instruction manual.
-
4
Carefully measure and mark off the area for the sunroof with a grease pencil or permanent marker over masking tape.
-
5
Tape the template to the top of the roof using the measured marks as your guide. Use a laser level or chalk line to ensure that your template is straight, and smooth out any wrinkles or folds in the paper.
-
6
Cut out the template area that will eventually be the opening in the sunroof.
-
7
Outline the opening with a grease pencil, leaving the frame of the template in place.
-
8
Drill into the front frame pieces at the indication marks. These will be the pilot holes for the wind deflector. Make sure that you only drill through the metal roof and not through your liner board or headliner material.
-
9
Make a pilot hole just inside the traced outline for the opening by drilling straight down into the metal.
-
10
Use a jig saw, reciprocating saw, die grinder or nibbler to remove the metal from the roof of the care. If you don't have any of these tools at home already, most hardware stores will have them available for rent.
-
11
Peel the metal slice away from the roof, paying careful attention to the roof ribs that run across the top of the car.
-
12
Cut the roof ribs along the cut out line with a die grinder or reciprocating saw. A jig saw is less likely to do the job well.
-
13
Disconnect the dome light and remove it from the interior of the roof.
-
14
Cut the headliner board with a sharp utility knife using the metal frame of the roof cut to guide you.
-
15
Carefully line the headliner board with 3/4-inch masking tape along the cut edge. You should do this from the inside, since you will not be able to reach this surface very well from the top of the car.
-
16
Cut along the outside edge of the masking tape, widening the opening in the headliner board to be slightly larger than the hole in the roof.
-
17
Trim the roof ribs down 3/4 inches further than the roof opening.
-
18
Grind or file the cut roof edges to remove any sharp edges. This is very important, since the folding roof is fabric and can easily snag or tear on any sharp edges.
-
19
Lay down the aluminum buffer strips around the edge of the cut opening, being careful to line the edges up.
-
20
Install the wind deflector using the sealing washers and nuts that should be provided in your kit. Allow the deflector to remain loosely attached.
-
21
Drop the folding sunroof into the cut out carefully. Walk all the way around the car, inspecting the fit to make sure the rubber seals are properly seated on the frame.
-
22
Wire the motor down through the "A" pillar, or the shaft on either side of the windshield, if you are installing a motorized folding sunroof.
-
23
Insert the rear clamp frame and bolt it down.
-
24
Attach the side frame pieces and screw in all the way around both sides.
-
25
Install the support beams. Be sure to tighten all the screws to the same tightness all around the opening.
-
26
Snap the trim covers for the side and rear frames into place.
-
27
Line the frame with the pinch trim beginning at the center of the rear of the frame.

Tips & Warnings
Be careful not to press hard on the sunroof as you place the frame into the cutout. Without the supportive structure, it is very easy to dent the metal of what remains of the roof.
