Homeschooling in Wyoming is an viable option for families. The laws are pretty lenient, but must be known in order to start homeschooling. Below is a basic overview of the laws governing a homeschool in this state.

Things You'll Need:

  • Curriculum outline
  1. Step 1

A parent is free to run a homeschool for their children without needing to meet any special educational requirements. A homeschool is allowable in the state of Wyoming.

  2. Step 2

If the homeschool is operated under the control of a church, then it is no longer considered a homeschool and is labeled a religious, church or parochial school. That kind of a school must meet an entirely different set of state statutes.

  3. Step 3

A homeschool must only provide instruction for members of one family. If more than one family is involved, it is no longer considered a homeschool.

  4. Step 4

A curriculum that shows the basic academic program that will be provided is required to be submitted to the local board of trustees every year. If for any reason a curriculum is not annually submitted, then it is assumed that the homeschool does not meet the state law requirements.

  5. Step 5

A child in Wyoming is not required to attend school until the age of seven, thus there are no requirements for kindergarten homeschool students.

  6. Step 6

There are no testing requirements placed on homeschool students by the State of Wyoming. This means that there are no required standardized or statewide tests required to be taken. Also, there are no other forms of assessment that are required.

  7. Step 7

Wyoming law is vague on attendance requirements for homeschools, but it is reasonable to keep in mind that private and public schools are all required to have students attend for 175 days a year. A homeschool should strongly consider having instruction take place for around the same amount of days.

  8. Step 8

All required subjects must be taught in a manner that is progressive as well as sequential. Subjects must include reading, math, civics, writing, science, history and literature. Other subjects may be taught, but they are considered optional by the State of Wyoming.
