Do you travel by plane often? If you're like most, you find plane flights can be very uncomfortable. There's little legroom anymore, no food being offered on most flights, and an array of other annoyances that make it hard to enjoy a flight. If you're looking to be at ease on your flights, then read on. Here are some tips for how to be comfortable and make the skies friendly once again.

From Quick Guide: American Airlines Guide
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider seat selection. If you are looking for extra legroom, the best seats are in the exit rows. You have to meet certain requirements to book these seats, such as being over a certain age and able to help people in the event of a plane evacuation. Unless there an emergency, you generally won't have to do anything.

  2. Step 2

Know that if you are flying Southwest Airlines, there are no seat assignments. To get a good seat, you have to check in early to make sure you get in the first group out of A, B and C to board the plane. This way, you have a better chance of getting the seat you want, such as the exit row seating.

  3. Step 3

Know that when choosing a window or aisle seat, figure out what your needs are. If you choose an aisle seat, you can move around in the cabin more easily and not have to disturb people. If you choose a window, you have something to lean against to sleep during the flight.

  4. Step 4

Choose flights that won't end up being full. On a full flight, there will be someone in all of the seats, which can get tight. On a flight with not many passengers, you may have a whole three seat section to yourself to spread out. Fly at off times and on off days to help your chance of being on a less than full flight. The best bets are Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays mid day or late in the evening. Don't fly around major holiday periods or times when there is a big event going on at your destination (like flying to Daytona Beach during Bike Week.)

  5. How to Be Comfortable On the Plane Itself

  6. Step 1

Wear comfortable clothes. Don't wear tight jeans or a suit and tie. If you have a meeting once you arrive, just change your clothes once you get there. Nothing makes for a more uncomfortable flight than not being able to get comfortable in your seat.

  7. Step 2

Take your own neck pillow. This way, whatever seat you end up with, you can take a nap and be comfortable.

  8. Step 3

Prepare your things ahead of time. Put the things you will need on the plane in your purse and have them ready. If you will need aspirin and a neck pillow, have them handy and ready to grab on the flight. Don't put needed items in your carry-on suitcase up in the storage bin, because then you just have to bother everyone to get it down mid-flight.

  9. Step 4
    Bring Some Healthy Snacks

Take your own food on the plane. Pack snack foods and buy water after you get through security. This is useful if your flight doesn't serve food. Don't undermine the chance that you could get delayed on even the shortest flight and end up being on the plane for hours. An example would be if the airport of your destination closed for two hours due to fog and the pilot has to circle the airport in a holding pattern waiting to land.

  10. Step 5

Locate a blanket and pillow in the racks. Then you can go to sleep even before the plane takes off and not have to wait for the steward or stewardess to get you one.

Tips & Warnings
  • Checking in early for a Southwest flight in today's times means checking in online, up to 24 hours before your flight. If you wait until you get to the airport, you probably will not be in the first boarding group, even if you get there two or three hours early.
  • Some airlines charge extra to allow you to book your specific seat ahead of time. Airtran charges about $6 for each part of your flight to select seats.
  • Just because a flight says you will be served food, doesn't mean something can't happen. They may not have enough food for everyone due to an accident or miscount, for example. Bring your own snacks for an emergency!
