Hide (Almost) Anything

With home burglary at an all-time high, it's becoming more of a challenge to keep your valuables safe. The safe is strong, but it's always a target. It's a really good idea to think outside the box (or the safe, in this case) and come up with some non-traditional hiding spots for your jewels, watches and cash. Here are some great alternatives.

    How to Hide (Almost) Anything

  1. Step 1

The first thing to do is to sit down in your living room and have a look around. What are some obvious choices? How about the sofa? There's the cloth covering on the bottom that hides the hollow part and it's only filled with foam. This would make a great place to hide lots of things and not an obvious choice for burglars to look. Even if they were to slash it, it's very unlikely they would go deep enough to get to your loot. If you want to hide something there that you need on a regular basis, it's best to replace the cover back with Velcro or double-sided sticky tape. That way, you won't have to worry about re-stapling it back each time you open it up.

  2. Step 2

Another place a crook will never look is inside the hollow of a light switch. Although it's small, it's big enough to hide an expensive necklace and/or a few rings. Simply unscrew the face plate, insert the goods, then replace the plate. Make sure to put your goods inside a plastic bag first.

  3. Step 3

A brilliant place to hide things is inside a shower curtain rod. Basically, it is a large plastic tube with a hollow center. Using it as a hiding spot is as simple as removing one end of the tube, inserting the goods, replacing the end cap, then rehanging the holder back in place.

  4. Step 4

If you have a 2-story home, the staircase makes a great spot. Simply remove a stair and there's your hiding spot. Nail or Velcro the wood back in place, and it's hidden. Other places are inside food in the refrigerator, inside empty soda cans, in heating ducts and vent or under a cutout square tile in the bathroom or kitchen.

Tips & Warnings
  • You are only limited by your imagination.
  • Hiding valuables under the bed isn't a good idea.
  • Make sure whatever spot(s) you choose are absolutely safe from causing a fire or any other kind of damage.

on 4/14/2008 I love the part about the stairs what a great idea and so easy to do not many people will take the time to look under the stairs. My father would hide his candy in the drop ceiling so his kids would not eat them. Thanks for the great tip. I will make this one of my projects this summer.
