Form a Band and Book Gigs

Everybody wants to be a rock star. This article won't give you untold fortune and more groupies than you can handle, but it will help to put you on the right path to achieving that dream.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Okay, you've decided to be a rock star, but you can't do this alone. Step one is to find like-minded individuals that are roughly on the same skill level as you. If you don't have any such friends, you'll have to make some. Ask around, post fliers at the record shop or at school and take out an ad in the paper.

  2. Step 2

After you have all the members together, you need to find a place to rehearse. Usually the basement is a primo choice. It's safe and a lot quieter than the garage. Plus, you don't have to worry about taking up space your dad uses to park his car. Use your time wisely and don't just hang out and talk. The goal is to play in public, right? So, you need to be good.

  3. Step 3

Okay, you have a decent sound and a set list of the latest, coolest songs that everyone knows. The next step is to put together what's called a "promo-pack," or promotional pack. Take pictures of the band, and record a decent quality tape or CD for bar owners to hear. Since you have never played anywhere before, this gives them a sample of what you sound like.

  4. Step 4

If you're lucky enough to get booked, be sure not to get greedy. The purpose of getting booked for the first time is not about the money--it's about the show and playing for the very first time. If the bar owner offers you a bit of cash, that's great but don't expect any. Usually for a first time band, you'll get free drinks and a small percentage of the door--maybe. Remember, the goal is to perform in public. After your first couple of gigs you'll have some leverage, especially if your band is good, and packing the bar. When that's the case, then you can start negotiating for cash plus free drinks. When that does happen, get ready for the groupies.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.
  • It's best to start out by learning cover songs, or non-original songs you hear on the radio. After the band has a following, then you can start to slowly play some originals at gigs.
  • Being in a band is a lot like being in a romantic relationship. Expect a lot of ups and downs, arguments, fights, and screaming. However, it can all be worth it if you can stick it out.
