The chance of getting a cold or flu increases as winter approaches. But there are some effective herbal remedies that are easy to find. Echinacea is an important herb that can help kick that cold or fight that flu at the first sign of infection.

Things You'll Need:

  • Good quality dried, ground Echinacea root
  • Grated ginger
  • Orange slices
  • Peppermint
  • Clean glass jar
  • Vodka, brandy or apple cider vinegar
  • Cheesecloth
  • Funnel
  • Small dropper-top bottles (optional)

    How to Make Echinacea Tincture

  1. Step 1

    Fill your jar about 1/3 full with ground Echinacea root.

  2. Step 2

    Add 2 tablespoons chopped or grated fresh ginger root.

  3. Step 3

    Add 3 to 4 orange slices with peel (make sure they haven't been sprayed with insecticide).

  4. Step 4

    Add 2 tablespoons freshly-chopped or dried peppermint.

  5. Step 5

    Fill the jar with vodka, brandy or apple cider vinegar.

  6. Step 6

    Shake your mixture daily for four weeks, then strain it through cheesecloth. If you store it in a cool, dark place it will keep indefinitely.

  7. Step 7

    If you wish, transfer your completed tincture into small dropper-top bottles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take echinacea in small doses to ward off colds and flu. 1 full dropper twice a day works well for this purpose.
  • It’s important to begin taking echinacea at the first sign of illness.
  • If you get a cold or flu, increase your dosage to three full droppers three times each day.
  • Continue taking your tincture until all of your symptoms are gone.
  • Taper off your dosage gradually as you start feeling better.
