From Quick Guide: Vinegar 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your favorite type of whole grain bread
  • One ripened tomato
  • One small avocado
  • One head of romaine lettuce
  • One red onion
  • One slice of your favorite cheese (like Swiss, Monterey Jack, Provolone or vegan cheese) from your local deli
  • Low-fat mayonnaise or honey mustard
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  1. Step 1

Choose a ripened tomato, avocado and head of romaine lettuce from a farmer’s market or local grocery store. Stop by the deli and order a few slices of your favorite cheese. Choose the type of wheat bread you prefer. Some people like soft loaves, while others enjoy hard rolls.

  2. Step 2

Thoroughly clean the tomato and head of romaine lettuce. Place them aside to dry. Then cut two medium slices of tomato, one thin slice of red onion and avocado.

  3. Step 3

Place two slices of bread beside each other. Spread a generous portion of low-fat mayonnaise or honey mustard over one slice of bread. Add one slice of cheese to the same slice that has the condiments. Then add the slices of avocado, tomato and red onion to the other slice of bread.

  4. Step 4

Place two leaves of lettuce on the slice of bread with the cheese and condiments. Add a dash of balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper and garlic powder over the side that has the avocado, tomato and red onion.

  5. Step 5

Sandwich the loaded bread together. Cut the sandwich into two pieces and place on a large plate.

  6. Step 6

Serve the sandwich with a side of carrot sticks and dip, salad and low-fat chips.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you thoroughly clean all your veggies.
  • Try different types of breads after your initial sandwich. Try whole wheat pita, dark-German or pumpernickel bread.
  • Feel free to add other veggies to your sandwich.
  • Make a strawberry and banana smoothie for dessert.
  • Another tasty dessert would be two scoops of lemon or orange sherbet.
  • Do not be skeptical of veggie sandwiches if this is your first time eating a sandwich with no meat. It is important to try new things!
  • Avocados are delicious, but they are also high in fat. Try not to overindulge.
  • Do not add more than a dash of balsamic vinegar. It may overpower the fresh taste of the veggies.
  • Modify the ingredients, if you have any food allergies to the veggies or seasonings listed above!
