install a light fixture

Need someone to shed some light on installing a new light fixture? Tired of living with that 70's wall sconce? Here is a quick guide...

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire strippers
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire caps
  • Light fixture
  • Electrical tape
  • Screw driver
  1. Step 1

Turn off power at the breaker.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew your old fixture. Be sure to hold on to the fixture since the wires are all still attached.

  3. Step 3

Begin unscrewing the wirecaps. After unscrewing the wirecaps, put them back on the wires coming from the wall to keep them handy.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew the ground screw. The fixture should now come loose.

  5. Step 5

Unscrew the bracket that was used to hold the old fixture.

  6. Step 6

Screw in the bracket for the new fixture. Also, many brackets have a screw or bolt that runs through the middle to hold the fixture. Install this now.

  7. Step 7

Hold the fixture and take the ground wire (green or bare wire) and wrap it around the ground screw, along with the ground from the wall. Tighten the ground screw.

  8. Step 8

Take wire cap off the white wire and hold the fixture's white wire next to it. Screw the wirecap over both wires, securing them together. (most fixtures come with the wires already stripped. Cut the stripped wire to the length of the wire from the wall. If not, strip the wires back using the strippers.)

  9. Step 9

Do the same with the black wire now.

  10. Step 10

Tuck all wires beneath the fixture as you place it on the bracket.

  11. Step 11

    Screw fixture to the bracket.

  12. Step 12

    Screw in light bulb.

  13. Step 13

Turn on the breaker, and stare in awe!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use electrical tape to seal off the wirecaps if installing an outdoor fixture.
  • Always turn off power at the breaker to be safe
  • make sure all bare wire is in the wirecap!!! If it does not fit, then use a larger cap, or cut the wire down.
