Here's how to say a few easy Russian words. They may come in handy if you ever plan to visit a Russian speaking country, or if you ever meet some one from one. Speaking Russian isn't hard it just takes time. So, stick with it and you will be speaking Russian in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Flashcards
Step1
Write each word on a piece of paper with the English words and Russian pronunciation.
Dog – sah-bah-kah
Cat – Kot (Like ‘coat’)
Tiger - Teeger
Step2
Look at these words through out the day, and say them to yourself or someone else as much as possible. Bear – Med-ved
Lion - Lev
Elephant – S-lone
Step3
With the words make your self a quiz. You can do this with flash cards or by folding a paper in half. Flash cards are nice because you can shuffle the order, and combine them with other words you are learning. Horse – low-shad
Pig – sveen-ya
Bird – pa-teet-sah

Tips & Warnings

  • Word association is key. Drawing a picture or hearing specific sounds in a word can be very helpful in memorization. For example Potatos in Russian sounds like 'car' 'toe' and 'fell' With those three words that are each familiar to you make up a picture in your mind of a car that's brown like a potato, in the shape of a toe, and has fallen off a cliff. Chances are you will remember the word for potatos for along time.

on 6/24/2008 sidahboo-thank you for your comment. Your post is accurate. I believe that it is important to get the basics then move into the rules and the popular usage of words. I'll have to think about doing a few articles that will explain this in the future.

on 6/24/2008 Keep in mind, as this seems to be a common mistake, that generally the Russians use the feminine for many animals. This includes cat. What is listed above is the male version, which Russians will only refer to a cat as thus if they positively know the cat is male. The word generally used is "Koshka". I apologize for transliterating, but I don't have a Cyrillic keyboard handy. ;D
