Poison ivy and poison oak can leave many people skin very irritable. Living out on the farm we came into contact allot with poison ivy. What I have learned through my grandma is that poison ivy and poison oak effects each person differently, and can not be treated the same. And for that said one time a method might work for you and the next time it might not. So here are the best ways my grandma has known to cure the itch.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Poison Ivy or Poison Oak.

Step1
Wash the affected area with alcohol as soon as possible to lessen the rash.
Step2
If you can head off the poison ivy or oak before the rash appears soap is a great remedy to decrease the effects. After you have contact with the plants be sure to scrub the exposed area with soap to wash off the resin. Getting the resin off your skin is important, it may keep you from breaking out in a rash.
Step3
The use of household bleach has been know to work wonders to remove poison ivy or oak resin. Pat the effected skin with bleach, let set for only a few minutes, then rinse.
Step4
If available the liquid form of the herb goldenseal has been reported to relieve symptoms quickly. This is usually available in most major drug stores.
Step5
If you know that you may come into contact with this poison, make up a batch of mugwort tea and put it in the fridge to chill. After you are done with your work outside come in and apply it to your skin. Make sure tea is cold, if warm tea will open up your pores and make the rash become worse.
Step6
Placing tofu on a poison ivy rash can stop the itching a give your skin a cooling and smoothing effect.
Step7
If your rash is already in full force. Rub the inside of a banana peel over your affected skin every hour for a day. Make sure to use a new peel for each application.
Step8
If you are away from home and get into poison ivy or oak role around in the mud. The mud will help to draw out the infection.
