Things You'll Need:
- A book
- A mirror
- elastic band (like the kind used for weight training) or a long scarf
-
Step 1
To sing with correct breath support you must first have good posture. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. make sure your knees are over your feet and your hips are over your knees. Make sure your shoulders are down and back (not hunched forward or pulled too far back) and your head is level (neither looking up at the ceiling or down at the floor). If you have a full length mirror nearby, this is a good way to check your posture. Stand sideways facing the mirror and make sure that everything is in line.
-
Step 2
Take a breath. Your stomach should expand all the way around. There are several ways to check this. You can take an elastic band or long scarf and wrap it around your stomach. You should feel the stomach and ribs expand against the band as you breathe in. You can also lay on the floor with a book on your stomach. Make sure that the stomach rises toward the ceiling on the inhale. Make sure that your shoulders do not go up on the inhale.
-
Step 3
Breathe out. Make sure the stomach goes toward your spine on the exhale. If you have a scarf wrapped around your stomach, you should feel the stomach and ribs pull away from the scarf. If you are laying on the floor, the book on your stomach should go towards the floor as you breathe out.

on 3/10/2008 Really great advice! I am usually sitting on a stool or chair when I play and Sing. In a Club somewhere where darkness and neon lights guide you in and out of the place...But I still want to sound my best!
I Love the Anatomical/Physiology prospect. The Body Core is the most amazing tool for health and pleasure! Bye Amy. Bailey, (man you are up early) singing yet?
