On mile 11 of a paved mountain road there is a small, family-owned, family-friendly mountain retreat called Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort. Recognized for its awesome powder, snowcat skiing and 2000 skiable acres, this diamond in the rough offers more than winter fun. After a hardy mountain breakfast at the Targhee Steak house, or some lighter fare from the General Store, there are several family friendly activities to engage in. Check out the activity center or plan your own adventures. Read on to learn how to enjoy Grand Targhee Resort in the summer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go horseback riding. Enjoy Bustle Creek Outfitter’s combined experience of more than 40 years as they guide you on one-hour, two-hour or half- and full-day trips. You’ll ride the mountainside, see beautiful vistas, bountiful wildlife and rushing mountain streams. They also offer Western and English style riding lessons.

  2. Step 2

Enjoy hiking. Surrounded by the Targhee National Forest, the Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, the hiking is unlimited. You can follow the marked trails for 30 minutes or several hours, forge your own path, or take a guided hike with the resort naturalist.

  3. Step 3

Try mountain biking. There are riding opportunities for the beginner to the expert. If you crave adrenaline and consider yourself an expert rider, take your bike up the chairlift and dare yourself to bike down. If you’re looking for something more serene, peddle around the base and coast through the aspens. Bike rental is available.

  4. Step 4

Consider disc golf. Regardless of your experience or activity level, this is a sport you’re sure to enjoy and the course is free.

  5. Step 5

Enjoy chairlift rides. You’ll ride up to the 10,000-foot summit of Fred’s Mountain. Take in beautiful scenery and enjoy uncompromised views of the Teton Range at the top. You’ll also be able to view the lands of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Ride the lift down, or hike your way back to the base.

  6. Step 6

Plan children’s activities. Four separate age groups (three to four, five to six, seven to nine, and 10 to 13) will enjoy “hands on” outdoor summer activities.
